Press conference 2019

At the ECHR’s annual press conference on 24 January 2019 President Guido Raimondi took stock of the year 2018 and presented the statistics for the past year.
In particular, President Raimondi stated that the number of incoming cases was stable and reiterated the importance of the principle of subsidiarity. He also noted that the main challenge facing the Court was the arrival of cases that were complex or raised new issues.

Speaking at the Court’s annual press conference on 25 January 2018, President Guido Raimondi reviewed the year 2017 and presented the statistics for the past year.
He referred in particular to the increase in the number of new cases, but said that a large number of applications had been declared inadmissible for failure to exhaust domestic remedies. In that connection the President reiterated the importance of the principle of subsidiarity, which requires applicants to exhaust national remedies before applying to the Court.

Speaking at the annual press conference of the Court on 26 January 2017, President Guido Raimondi took stock of the year 2016 and reported that the volume of incoming cases, after falling over the previous two years, had considerably increased.
This had largely been the result of the situation in three countries: Hungary and Romania, for complaints about detention conditions, and Turkey, especially since the dramatic attempted coup d’état in July 2016.

Speaking at the annual press conference of the Court on 28 January 2016, President Raimondi took stock of the year 2015 and described the situation generally as satisfactory.
The President pointed out that much work remained to be done and that very close cooperation with the member States was called for, in the spirit of “shared responsibility”. He stressed the need for each member State to ensure that endemic problems were resolved at domestic level rather than being brought before the Court.

The Court held its annual press conference on Thursday 27 January 2011. On this occasion, Jean-Paul Costa, the President of the Court, presented a summary of the Court’s activities and its statistics for 2010 and gave an overview of the reforms that have been implemented since the Interlaken conference in 2010.
During the press conference, President Costa made public the first joint declaration of the Presidents of the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union concerning the European Union's forthcoming accession to the European Convention on Human Rights.
